ABOUT
Our methodology evaluates sustainability performance against publicly available data. Our framework will evolve alongside ithe industry and improved disclosure practices.
RAISING ESG STANDARDS FOR SPACE
The global space community operates across dual realms of sustainability, both terrestrial impacts with well-developed and recognised international standards, and emerging space-specific considerations, yet to be fully captured in ESG frameworks. Whilst companies may excel at addressing Earth-based operations, the unique challenges of space environments demand new approaches to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and governance accountability.
Current ESG disclosure in the space sector remains limited compared to other industries, creating an opportunity to drive meaningful change through transparent assessment and engagement. We evaluate companies across comprehensive sustainability criteria from supply chain practices to emissions and governance structures. In doing so we can identify leaders and encourage broader industry adoption of best practices.
Our methodology embraces continual improvement, evolving assessment frameworks alongside advancing research knowledge and emerging industry standards. We recognise that sustainable progress requires practical action: acknowledging known and material harms, researching emerging risks, and developing reporting mechanisms that companies can implement. This iterative approach balances academic rigour with the practicalities and commercial viability of industry.
Sustainability of Space aims to create pathways for transition planning and implementation that account for both traditional business impacts and the complex challenge of operating in space as a shared, global commons.
MEET THE AUTHOR,
ANDREW IWANOCZKO
Andrew's career has focused on using satellite-derived earth observation to underpin positive environmental and social outcomes. Sustainability of Space is pioneering a shift in how Environmental, Social, and Governance principles are interpreted and applied across the space sector, recognising space as a global commons.
Through partnerships with academic and key industry actors, Andrew advances frameworks by aligning terrestrial ESG standards with space-specific profiles. His values-driven approach emphasises transparency, transition-doing, and positive impact over time.
Andrew treats the acknowledgement of unique behaviours and contributions to harms by each stakeholder as critical to stepping towards long-term sustainability in, for, and of space.
